Computer science opens more doors for students than any other discipline in today’s world. Learning even the basics will help students in virtually any career—from architecture to zoology. Just as we teach students how to dissect a frog, or how electricity works, it’s important for every 21st century student to have a chance to design an app or an algorithm, or learn how the Internet works. 

 

Not only does computer science provide every student foundational knowledge, it also leads to the highest-paying, fastest-growing jobs in the U.S. economy. Here in the Hoosier State alone, there are currently over 4,500 open computing jobs, in every sector, from manufacturing to banking, from agriculture to healthcare, and those jobs average $74,459 in salaries, much higher than the statewide average of $42,940. 

 

Whether a student aspires to be a software engineer, or if she just wants a well-rounded education in today’s changing world, access to computer science in school is an economic imperative for our state to remain competitive. And with the growing threat of cyber warfare, this is even a critical matter of national security.
